Let me start by saying I am a big Quentin Tarantino fan and have seen all of his movies multiple times. Understandably, I was looking forward to watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
I should point out that I'm aware of Sharon Tate, her marriage to Roman Polanski and her untimely death, along with some of her friends, at the hands of the Charles Manson Family. I also have fond memories of watching Bruce Lee in The Green Hornet, albeit retrospectively, as a Kid. So yeah, I haven't "missed the point" and I understand the "clever" movie references. I also truly believe It contains some fine acting from Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. What I don't understand is how you can call this a Movie? There simply is no discernible plot!
What made Jackie Brown, Hatefully Eight, Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, Django etc. great movies, were the clever twists and turns, the big reveals, the stylish cinematography, cool music and the lavish revengeful climaxes. These movies were trend setting, genre defining they transcended movie, art and pop culture.
This so called movie however, has none of this distinction. This isn't a movie, this is a tragic, I hate to say it- boring, awful mess which if penned by anyone else would be turned down by Netflix!
I can't stress how strongly this should be avoided!
I give the 3 stars for DiCaprio and Pit's acting alone.
